Jover Chew returns to court
Jover Chew, the owner of now-defunct Sim Lim Square electronics shop Mobile Air, will return to court today for a hearing on the 28 charges he faces, including for conspiring to cheat customers of over S$16,000. Four of his ex-employees facing similar charges were sentenced to between four and 14 months’ jail earlier this month. Mobile Air became notorious after a video of a tourist going on his knees to beg for a refund at the shop went viral. The Vietnamese customer had paid S$950 for an iPhone 6 but was told he had to add S$1,500 in warranty fees.
GE2015 expenses open for inspection
From today, the expenses returns submitted by electoral candidates for General Election 2015 will be open for inspection. Anyone who wishes to inspect these returns can make arrangements to do so with the Elections Department and will need to pay S$2 to inspect each set of candidate returns.
US, China clash over South China Sea
All eyes are on Washington and Beijing after the Chinese government yesterday accused the United States of committing a “deliberate provocation” by sending a navy destroyer into Chinese claimed waters in the South China Sea. Washington is challenging the 12-nautical-mile territorial limits China asserts around the islands in the Spratly archipelago, adding that the patrol was launched to exercise the right to freedom of navigation in international waters.
How will Indonesia tackle the haze?
Indonesian President Joko Widodo is under increasing pressure to tackle the worsening regional haze emanating from his country, as he cut short his visit to the United States to return home today. Vice President Jusuf Kalla yesterday said that Indonesia is considering declaring a national emergency over the forest fires.
