Star Zest Home Tuition and its director, 35-year-old Law Han Wei, sent messages to mobile subscribers to market the services of its tutors between Jan 3 and 14.
The tuition agency and Law were fined after pleading guilty to 13 out of the 37 charges, which the prosecution proceeded on. For each charge, the tuition agency and Law were fined S$3,000.
The court heard between Jan 2 and April 2, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) received a total of 405 complaints from 313 complainants on receiving a specified message from the tuition agency despite registering their telephone numbers on the DNC Registry.
Anyone found guilty under the Personal Data Protection Act could be fined up to S$10, 000 per charge.
