Martino steps down as Barca coach

Gerardo “Tata” Martino has stepped down from his position as Barcelona coach after ceding the Spanish Primera Division championship to Atletico Madrid.

“I regret that I couldn’t help the guys reach the goals that the club normally sets,” said Martino at a press briefing, the video of which was posted on the club’s website. “Leading this team has filled me with great pride.”

La Liga was the last major trophy left after Barcelona failed to reach the final of European Champions league and lost to Real Madrid in the final of the Copa del Rey.

Needing to beat Atletico Madrid, Barcelona could manage only a 1-1 draw in Saturday’s final match of the season.

Following the result, Barcelona chairman Josep Maria Bartomeau said the club face “profound changes”. “Some players won’t continue,” he added. BLOOMBERG
