SINGAPORE — Launched five years ago, the Canon SuperSeries Bowling Championship aims to encourage organisations to promote a healthy work-life balance among their employees by creating a platform for team bonding and networking.

And it is a philosophy that has a firm supporter in entrepreneur Nicholas Goh. The 33-year-old Chief Executive Officer of Verztec Consulting Pte Ltd is a strong believer in using sport to bond his staff, as well as giving back to society — like being involved in the Yellow Ribbon project. He feels that, through sport, his staff is able to harness a sense of competitiveness that can be used in his business.

“We strongly encourage our staff to take part in events like the Canon SuperSeries and the Yellow Ribbon Project,” said Goh.

“The Canon SuperSeries has given us a platform for our staff to nurture a positive competitive edge that can be used in our business. We send three teams every year, and it has helped us build bonds between departments, as you don’t see them work with each other on a day-to-day basis. In that sense, we build a common interest within the company.

“Also, being involved in charity is important for the staff. A few of them have gone on to volunteer their time to help the less fortunate. These events will benefit everyone in the long-run.”

This year’s series is spread over three legs — the others being April 26 and Aug 30 — before the Grand Finale on Sept 27 at Orchid Bowl.

The overall champion will be awarded a cash prize of S$1,000, with the runners-up and third-placed finishers walking away with S$600 and S$400 respectively.

The top three overall teams at the Grand Finale will also receive Canon products.

Each of the three qualifying series will feature 36 teams from multinational firms as well as home-grown companies.

Last night, Verztec Consulting’s three teams finished 28th, 33rd and 35th out of 36 teams in the series’ second-leg held at the Orchid Bowl.

But Goh said: “My teams did very well, even though we did not win. There was so much energy and excitement.” Produced BY The today sports team
