KUALA LUMPUR —  Joseph Schooling cruised to victory in his pet event, the 100m butterfly, in the first event of the third day of the SEA Games swimming competition on Wednesday evening (Aug 23)

Schooling, the Olympic champion in the event, clocked 51.38sec to smash the Games record of 52.13s, which he set in 2015.

The 22-year-old finished more than a second ahead of nearest rival Triady Fauzi Sidiq of Indonesia, who clocked 53.03 to take silver. Another Indonesian, Glenn Victor Sutanto, got bronze with a time of 53.25s.

Singapore's other representative in the event, 18-year-old Dylan Koo, clocked 53.85s to finish fourth.

Said Schoolng after the race: "It was not too bad a time. It wasn't the best time but I am happy with the effort and the result. Most important thing is to get to touch the wall first and get the record.

"This meet is not about setting new times but about helping the team and mentoring the younger swimmers. Also, my goal coming to Kuala Lumpur is to win all my events. I am looking forward to tomorrow's events."
