KUALA LUMPUR — The family of Anwar Ibrahim will not be able to visit him on Hari Raya Aidilfitri today (July 17), his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said.

According to a Malaysiakini report, Dr Wan Azizah told her husband’s supporters outside the Sungai Buloh prison, where he is being held, that prison authorities told Anwar’s family to visit him on the fifth or sixth day of Raya.

She said that her family used to be able to visit the former deputy Prime Minister and opposition leader during his first stint in prison between 1999 and 2004, but is now unable to do the same.

“We have asked to see Anwar on Hari Raya, but it was not allowed and I was told that ‘on the first and second day of Hari Raya, we (prison officials) will be on holiday’,” she reportedly said last night, addressing some 150 Anwar supporters who gathered to show support for him.

“(The authorities said), ‘On the third and fourth day, there will be many (visitors). There are 5,000 inmates here, many family members will be coming,’ so we should come on the fifth or sixth day,” she added further.

Meanwhile, Anwar’s eldest daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar reportedly said that Anwar’s son Muhammad Ihsan would have to return to United States for work on the fourth day of Raya hence he would be missing an opportunity to meet his father.

Anwar, 67, has been in prison since February 10, when the Federal Court upheld his five-year sentence for allegedly sodomising a former aide in 2008.

Anwar maintains that the charges against him were political conspiracies.

There have been complaints by his lawyers that his health had been deteriorating while in prison.

He had also received hospital treatment recently. THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER
