BANGKOK — A bomb exploded in the centre of the Thai capital today (Aug 17), police said. At least 12 people were killed reported Reuters, citing police and a rescue worker.
Earlier media reports said five people were killed and 20 wounded.
The blast, near a shrine at the Rajprasong intersection, was caused by a bomb, police chief Prawut Thawornsiri said. The bomb could have been hidden in a motorcycle, Bangkok Post reported, quoting Lumphini police.
The explosion site was the center of many contentious political demonstrations in recent years. It appeared to have occurred in front of the Erawan Shrine, a tourist landmark also popular with Thais.
