Indonesian president calls Jakarta blasts 'acts of terror'

JAKARTA — Indonesian President Joko Widodo today (Jan 14) said multiple blasts that hit Jakarta, killing at least four people, were "acts of terror".

JAKARTA — Indonesian President Joko Widodo today (Jan 14) said multiple blasts that hit Jakarta, killing at least six people, were "acts of terror".

"Our nation and our people should not be afraid, we will not be defeated by these acts of terror, I hope the public stay calm," he said on TV station MetroTV.

"We all are grieving for the fallen victims of this incident, but we also condemn the act that has disturbed the security and peace and spread terror among our people."

Mr Widodo has ordered security forces to hunt down the perpetrators and their network behind the attacks in Jakarta.

He said: "I have received reports some time ago about the explosion in Thamrin street Jakarta. We express condolence to those who became victims, but we all also condemn the attack that caused restless among the community.''

He said he has ordered the national police chief and the minister for political and security affairs to hunt down and capture the perpetrators and those in their network. 
 
Mr Widodo said he was cutting short his visit to central Java today (Jan 14) to return to Jakarta after militants launched a gun and bomb assault in the centre of the capital.

The president urged Indonesians not to speculate over who was behind the attacks. AGENCIES
