KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysians on Twitter reacted with incredulity to the news of the attorney-general (A-G) clearing the prime minister of any wrongdoing in a RM2.6 billion donation (S$867 million) and over Finance Ministry-owned firm, SRC International.

Twitter users reacted with sarcasm and posed more questions over Mr Mohamed Apandi Ali’s announcement today (Jan 26) that investigations were closed based on the evidence submitted to him.

Anas Alam Faizli, using the Twitter handle @aafaizli, urged Mr Najib Razak to sue The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which had reported the money trail to the prime minister’s private bank accounts in July last year.

“Najib diisytiharkan tidak bersalah terima derma 2.6 bilion. Langkah berikutnya ialah saman WSJ. Go Najib go?” (Najib declared not guilty over RM2.6 billion donation. Next step is to sue WSJ)

Another social media user wanted a probe into deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who had said in December that there was more than one source for the RM2.6 billion donated to the Umno president.

@RajaMohdShahrim said, “Harap AG siasat dakwaan Zahid Hamidi.. dia ckp donor bukan dari satu sumber.. tp AG ckp dah pulangkan pd 1 sumber.” (Hope the A-G probes into Zahid Hamidi’s claim, he said donor not from one source, but A-G said money has been returned to one source).

Ms Paduka Marina Mahathir, using the Twitter handle @netraKL posted: “The point surely isn’t about returning it eventually but about receiving n not declaring it in the first place!”

Former minister, Zaid Ibrahim, who is facing a sedition charge, wondered how he got into the dock for asking Mr Najib to step down, while the prime minister was cleared of wrongdoing despite having billions in his accounts.

On his Twitter account @zaidibrahim, he said “Najib with billions in his accounts committed no offence; I who merely asked him to step down, did. Law students must answer this #fb”

Mr Zaid also posted, “If true MACC says no offence committed by Najib; then MACC should just close shop #fb”.

Another Twitter user @patricklsk said, “The ‘money was returned’ narrative was probably added in so that party members would stop asking him for donations.”

Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan, however, praised the A-G for not framing charges against the prime minister.

“I congratulate the AG for his wisdom and apt interpretation of facts. Never bowed to pressure. Always sticking to principle and the law.” THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER
