Owners of three S’pore-registered cars among seven under probe over emergency lane deaths in M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (RTD) will issue notices to the owners of seven vehicles, including three with Singapore-registered cars, who allegedly blocked an ambulance that was on its way to an accident site near Malacca on the North-South Expressway last weekend.

News Straits Times quoted RTD enforcement division chief V Valluvan Veloo on Friday (May 27) saying that the vehicles were identified via videos sent by the public after the incident, which reportedly led to the deaths of two accident victims.

“I have instructed the Malacca RTD to investigate the matter. There were 91 vehicles recorded in the videos sent to RTD, but we can identity only seven of them,” he was quoted as saying by the newspaper in Johor.

Mr Valluvan also said that his department would not take the matter lightly, as it was likely the use of the emergency lane by the vehicles that had resulted in the two deaths.

“We are taking this matter seriously. Some would say that nothing happens when they use the emergency lanes but in this instance two people lost their lives.

“We will issue investigation notices, under Section 114 of Road Transport Act 1987, to the owners of these vehicles,” he added.

The accident on Sunday involving two motorcyclists occurred at KM228 of the North-South Expressway near Alor Gajah and had caused a traffic congestion.

This made other motorists use the emergency lane, which delayed the ambulance from arriving at the scene.

It was reported that if the ambulance had arrived earlier, the two individuals may not have succumbed to their injuries. MALAY MAIL ONLINE
