PUTRAJAYA — A man whose brutal murder at a Johor Baru petrol station shocked the nation recently was a ‘kongsi gelap’ (secret society) leader.

This was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said that the attack was part of an ongoing clash between two secret societies.

"Police are hunting down four suspects who have been identified," he told reporters after the Home Ministry's monthly gathering here on Tuesday (Dec 19).

On the possibility that the murdered man's gang would retaliate in a very public manner, Mr Zahid, who is also the Home Minister, said police are ready to face it.

"The possibility of retaliation is there since it involves secret societies, and the police are always prepared to face such possibilities.

"We have the police's Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsterism (Stagg)," he added.

Mr Zahid said police are and will continue to carry out operations against secret societies.

However, he declined to name the two groups or specify the reason behind the clash.

On Sunday, the man, who was in his 30s, died after being stabbed by assailants and run over by a car at a petrol station in Taman Pelangi.

The entire gory incident was caught on video thanks to a bystander. The clip has since gone viral on WhatsApp and social media.

The man had been pumping air into his car tyres when he was accosted by four men in a white BMW.

The clip shows the men then trying to drag the man into their car, but after he put up a struggle, managed to free himself.

During the struggle, however, the man was stabbed several times.

With the man on the ground, his assailants got into their car, circled the petrol station and knocked him down. After hitting him, the BMW slammed into reverse and ran over the man once more, crushing him.

The BMW then sped out of the station, stopping briefly for one of the assailants to enter the car before fleeing.

Earlier, Mr Zahid had stressed on the importance of integrity among all staff under the Home Ministry and its agencies.

"We can have the best technologies and gadgets, (but they) will become meaningless when there are bad hats among us who are in cahoots with syndicates involved in the smuggling of illegals.

"How can I allow this? How can the ministry allow this? Of course, we cannot allow this.

"We should not have denial syndrome. Don't be blinded by praises and awards that we receive because (others) will only see our weaknesses and failures," he said.

Mr Zahid said this in reference to recent reports of Immigration Department staff being detained as part of investigations into the smuggling of Bangladeshis via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. NEW STRAITS TIMES
