1-Michelin-Starred Hill St Tai Hwa Pork Noodle Has New Preorder Takeaway Counter

Sating a craving for Hill St Tai Hwa Pork Noodle’s bak chor mee requires patience and endurance — the one-Michelin-starred hawker stall at Crawford Lane usually has a waiting time of at least 45 minutes.

Now, this stall is not to be confused with the similarly-named High Street Tai Wah Pork Noodle, which started as a stall at Hong Lim Food Centre and has been aggressively expanding as a hawker chain with numerous outlets islandwide. While it doesn’t have its own Michelin star, it was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand nod in 2021 (an accolade given to eateries who offer “great value-for-money options”).

However, the owners of these two stalls are brothers. Crawford Lane’s Hill St Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is run by Tang Chay Seng, and remains the only outlet of its kind, while his younger brother Chai Chye opened the Hong Lim stall, which has since been passed to Chai Chye’s sons Gerald and Jason.

But for those who balk at waiting for an hour for bak chor mee, here’s some good news: Hill St Tai Hwa Pork Noodle has finally addressed its notorious queue by opening a new takeaway-only counter within the same coffeeshop.

In a Facebook post, Tai Hwa explains that you can WhatsApp message your orders in advance to the stall’s number at 9272-3920 for collection later, and “your noodles will be ready by the time you arrive”. Do note that you have to preorder at least an hour in advance, but it sure beats hanging around the coffeeshop while trying to suppress our hunger pangs.
