22-Year-Old Chinese Streamer, Who Was Travelling Solo Around Tibet, Dies After Tragic Live Stream Mishap
She was reportedly crushed to death by the pink camper cart she was travelling in.
According to media reports, a 22-year-old Chinese live streamer, who went by the name Mei Mei, passed away on August 21 after a live stream accident.
Mei Mei, who hailed from Henan, China, was in the midst of travelling solo around Tibet in a solar-powered RV cart that she pulled around. She was accompanied by her two dogs and would live stream parts of her journey for her followers.
At around 6am on August 21, Mei Mei started live streaming as per usual. Netizens who had tuned in shared that all was well until around 7:44am.
Mei Mei had just finished eating breakfast at that time, and was about to head out to the road, having gotten all her items packed and ready to go.
However, she suddenly yelled out in shock, and her camera fell on the ground. The live stream was then cut off abruptly, leaving only a black screen.
Those who watched the live stream were very worried for Mei Mei. It didn't help that there were no further updates from her or on what happened until August 23.
On that day, Mei Mei’s friends took to their social media to post tributes to her, revealing that she had passed away on August 21. They shared that she’d been involved in an accident and that no other parties were involved. However, they did not share details of her death.
Two days later, a friend of Mei Mei known only as Miss Wang, shared more in an interview with the media.
She revealed that she’d gotten to know Mei Mei online, and that they were supposed to meet up on the day of her accident.
At around 5pm that day, she received a call from another friend of Mei Mei's informing her of the accident. She then rushed down to the site immediately.
According to the police officers on-site, Mei Mei’s pink cart was found stuck on a slope by the side of the road and Mei Mei was crushed under it. She had been live streaming when the accident happened.
As it happened in the early morning, vehicles that drove past could not see that Mei Mei was trapped under the cart. Local eyewitnesses also mentioned that if the drivers were focused on the road ahead, it would not have been possible for them to see her.
When the police reached the scene at around 9.30am, Mei Mei had already died.
According to reports, Mei Mei’s wake was held earlier this week. Miss Wang also paid tribute to the live streamer, describing Mei Mei as a “very kind girl, who recently donated 17,000 yuan (S$3,554) to the victims of the 2021 Henan flood .
