Andy Hui’s older brother auditions for TVB singing contest; judges surprised they look nothing alike

Will Hui Chi Wai, 62, become a star like Andy?

Andy Hui, 55, who rose to stardom in 1986 after finishing second in Hong Kong's New Talent Singing Awards, was one of the most popular Cantopop stars in the early noughties.

And it turns out, his elder brother, Hui Chi Wai, 62, is just as passionate about singing.

He recently auditioned for the second season of Midlife, Sing & Shine!, a singing competition by TVB for those over 35.

Lest you think Chi Wai used his celebrity connection to gain an advantage over other hopefuls, you’re wrong.

In fact, no one knew he was related to Andy because of how different they looked.

The only similarity they share are single eyelids, which eventually led to the revelation.

Chi Wai didn't plan on revealing that he is Andy's bro

During the audition, Chi Wai told the judges — Hong Kong star Maria Cordero and music producer Harry Ng  that he loves to sing and was inspired to join the competition after watching the first season.

After performing Heavenly King Jacky Cheung’s ‘Forgetful Love On A Cold Rainy Night’, Harry asked Chi Wai if anyone had told him that he looked like a singer.

Maria chimed in: “There are many singers with single eyelids. Your surname is Hui. Why didn’t you sing Andy Hui's song?"

Chi Wai replied with a laugh that Andy’s songs are “more difficult to sing”.

This was when it hit Maria that he could be related to Andy. She asked again: "Are you really Andy Hui's older brother?" to which Chi Wai confirmed with a "yes".

According to HK01, Chi Wai is the eighth in a family of 10 siblings, while Andy is the youngest.

Chi Wai currently works in a trading company and has a daughter.

Andy didn't know Chi Wai auditioned for the competition

In an interview with the media, Chi Wai admitted that his singing “was not up to standard” and that he forgot the lyrics and went off-tune as he was too nervous.

When asked if he sought advice from Andy, Chi Wai said: "I contacted him, but he didn't reply me. Perhaps he is too busy… He and my sister-in-law (Sammi Cheng) didn't know I joined the competition.”

As for why he didn’t perform Sammi’s song at the audition, Chi Wai said her songs are even more difficult to sing as he would need to switch keys, and that ‘Forgetful Love On A Cold Rainy Night’ is more suitable for him.

Chi Wai isn’t the only celeb sibling to take a stab at the competition.

The Bund star Ray Lui’s younger brother, Lui Leung Kwok, also showed up at the auditions, while Mandopop diva Coco Lee’s older sister and manager Nancy Lee was a contestant in the first season of the competition.
