China Reportedly Banning “Young And Good-Looking Idols" Like Yang Yang & Lay Zhang From Starring In Military-Themed Shows
It's one of the many new restrictions the Chinese government is allegedly implementing on Chinese dramas.
Remember how the Chinese government banned “sissy and effeminate” male stars, the overuse of beauty filters in dramas and even the use of foreign names by Chinese artistes?
Well, looks like they're back with new rules again.
The list is too long man
Recently, a Chinese director named Li Xiang shared a very lengthy post on Weibo about what he claimed was the "National Radio and Television Administration Deputy Director Zhu's Internal Speech."
In the post, he revealed that Chinese dramas are expected to face yet another round of heightened restrictions next year, especially in these six areas.
1. Military-themed dramas are not to be idolised or romanticised. It's also said that such dramas should not cast “young and good looking idols" such as Lay Zhang, Yang Yang and Bai Jingting. On top of that, actors who take on such roles should also have to undergo 15 days of army training from now on.
2. Costumes and make-up in period dramas should correspond accurately with the era the show is set in.
3. Shows about the army and public security are not to cast actors who have
"obviously undergone plastic surgery". “Effeminate” aesthetics and overly thick make-up that makes actors and actresses to look "fake" are also not allowed.
4. 60 per cent of shows should be realistic, with at least 20 per cent revolving around the Communist Revolution.
5. Idol dancers are not allowed to take on lead roles, stars with huge devoted fanbases are also not allowed to act in shows about important topics.
6. Citizens in dramas cannot appear too "uncouth" or be made to look like "accessories of the elites".
So you won't get to see such good looking army boys anymore?
The post was quickly removed by Li Xiang, and no official statement has been made as of now.
However, many netizens questioned the credibility of the speculations, adding that if they are true, are a little too overboard.
"[You] might as well just air history lessons," scoffed one such netizen.
