China's Spring Festival Gala Draws Record Viewership Of Almost 1.3 Bil

CCTV's Lunar New Year Eve show is the most-watched TV show in the world.

CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala has set a new record for the most-watched event in Chinese television history.

According to the state-run Chinese Media Group, almost 1.3 billion people around the world tuned in for the live broadcast of the Lunar New Year Eve special this year. That tops the 1.14 billion who watched the show last year.

The four-hour long extravaganza was livestreamed across various online platforms in over 170 countries and regions, such as the United States, France, and Singapore.

Dubbed “China’s Super Bowl”, the gala, which has been called the world's most-watched show, recorded a total viewership of 7.13 bil.

CCTV's Spring Festival Gala, which was first shown in 1983, features performances like singing, dancing, acrobatics and comedy acts by some of China's most popular and famous performers, all of whom were handpicked by the stringent organising committee.  

Among the stars who performed this year were Taiwanese singers Jam Hsiao and Angela Chang
