The Chinese Man Who Killed His Ex-Wife By Setting Her On Fire During A Livestream Has Been Executed

The case has sparked discussions on violence against women in China.

A Chinese man who gained infamy for gruesomely setting his ex-wife on fire on a livestream in 2020 was executed on Jul 23.

Tang Lu was married to popular social media influencer and livestreamer, Lhamo, who is a farmer of Tibetan descent, but they divorced in June 2020 after Tang had reportedly physically abused Lhamo.

Lhamo, a well-loved social media star with 250k followers, often took to her channel to share about her life and the Sichuan countryside.

During one of Lhamo's Douyin livestreams in September 2020, Tang appeared from behind her, drenched her in gasoline and set her on fire. She was sent to the hospital in critical condition, and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and passed away 16 days after the attack. She was 30 years old. Tang was arrested soon after the attack and sentenced to death in October 2021.

Tang was executed on Jul 23 in Sichuan, according to the Intermediate People’s Court of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonumous Prefecture. Prior to the execution, he was granted permission to see his family for one last time.

The farmer and content creator was loved by many

In a media interview, Lhamo’s sister revealed that Tang was often abusive towards her sister during their marriage and the violent behaviour was what caused Lhamo to eventually divorce him in June 2020.

He had tried to ask Lhamo to remarry in the months following their divorce but was turned away.

Lhamo’s death caused an uproar in China and sparked discussion around the topic of physical violence and abuse against women. Many also expressed their outrage regarding the circumstances that surrounded women in abusive marriages.
