Dennis Chew Is So Convincing As Aunty Lucy, One Kid Thought He's Actually Female

It made for a very funny exchange in a recent episode of Hello, Big Shots!.

Even though it’s been a while since we last saw Aunty Lucy on screen, it appears that many people, especially young kids, still associate Dennis Chew, 48, with that hilarious character.

In a recent episode of Hello, Big Shots!, a bunch of precocious kids came prepared with their questions for Dennis, or well, Aunty Lucy.

In fact, one of the first questions the Love 972 jock was asked was: “When will Aunty Lucy make a comeback?”

One boy even said that Dennis’ name is “Aunty Lucy” when asked.

But wait, were they even born when Aunty Lucy was making waves on television?

Even Dennis couldn’t help but to ask in disbelief: “Wow, is this role really so entrenched in their minds?"

Aunty Lucy was a character Dennis created for the 2009 variety show Paris And Milan. She was a middle-aged woman with a short, curly bob, and was known for her signature head “twist”, as Dennis described it, as well as her catchphrase, “So embarrassing”.

The character was so wildly popular, she even starred in movies like 2009’s Aunty Lucy Slam Dunk, as well as 2011’s It’s A Great Great World and 2012’s Dance Dance Dragon.

However, after 2012, Dennis hung up his Aunty Lucy wig, only reprising the character for short clips and guest appearances.

Last year, when Dennis was a guest on talk show Hear U Out, he revealed that he ‘retired' the Aunty Lucy ‘cos there were people who could not accept him cross-dressing.

He shared that he “had fewer friends” after playing the role, even though Aunty Lucy was the turning point in his career.

It seems like the Aunty Lucy has left one particular kid on the show very confused. She couldn’t quite understand how Dennis could play Aunty Lucy, and even addressed Dennis as “girl” at one point too.

“I can’t answer your question ‘cos I’m not a girl. You should call me Uncle Chongqing or Uncle Dennis,” Dennis explained to her.

But she was still confused.

“You’re definitely a female!” she exclaimed, adding: “Didn't the television show that [you’re Aunty Lucy]?

Guess it is hard for kids to separate reel and real life.

In any case, Dennis and the kid made good at the end of the episode, with Dennis jokingly asking her if she wanted to be his godchild.

Oh, and she agreed in a heartbeat, by the way.

Her reason? “'Cos you are very rich. You can buy me an iPhone,” she explained.
