Can’t Holler “Huat Ah!” While Tossing Yusheng? This App Will Do It For You
It plays auspicious lo hei messages and an extendable 'yam seng'.
No lusty hollering of auspicious sayings while you lo hei during Chinese New Year due to the new COVID-19 restrictions? No problem.
There’s a fun app that comes with pre-recorded audio clips of the usual ox-spicious phrases, so you can still enjoy the rowdiness that comes with tossing your raw fish and shredded veg (lo hei) amid tightened measures. According to the new regulations announced last week, those who are dining out must keep their face masks on during lo hei and there should not be “any verbalisation of the usual auspicious phrases”.
Created by someone who goes by the moniker DJ Beng, the app comes with 15 sayings, including “da ji da li (may you be blessed with great fortune and luck)”, “bu bu gao sheng (may you soar to greater heights)”, and the all-important “Huat ah!”. All recited in suitably auntie-like voices.
Not only do you not have to memorise the various sayings with this app, they are listed in the order in which the corresponding ingredients are supposed to be added during the lo hei. All you have to do is tap the button for each phrase.
It even comes with a raucous “yam seng!” (uttered by what sounds like a bunch of merrymaking uncles and aunties) which goes on for as long as you press the button — okay lah, the “yam” runs for about a maximum of 18 seconds (we timed it) before easing into a satisfying “seng!” Just like that drunk uncle that cannot shut up — but sans the flying spittle this time.
