For those of you who had missed out on some earlier F&B drama, know that there are two Eng’s outlets on Tanjong Katong Road. Earlier this year, the biz partners involved in Eng’s Wantan Noodle parted ways due to differing views on how to run the business. Hawker Ng’s son Desmond, who had succeeded his father in running the eatery, went on to set up a rival wonton mee shop called Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee right across the road from the original Eng’s. Meanwhile, the Lao Huo Tang Group took over the lease for the original shop space.

The cosy Eastpoint Mall corner unit, which is right beside a Daiso outlet, is also ‘fancier’ than its airy, no-frills shop at Tanjong Katong Road. Unlike the original shop, there’s air-con here (yay), and the new wooden tables and chairs are an improvement from its old-school rickety ones.

What remains the same: there’s still a squeeze bottle of Eng’s notoriously fiery chilli on every table (take our advice that a bit of that chilli sauce goes a very long way), and the prices here are also unchanged despite its fancier, modern digs.

A big plate of Wantan Mee is still $5.50 ($4.50 for small), Boiled or Fried Wantans go for $5 for large ($3 for small), Oyster Sauce Boiled Vegetables at $5 for large ($3 for small). And you wash your nosh down with the same Calamansi Juice that costs $1.50 at both the Tanjong Katong and Eastpoint branches.

The Lao Huo Tang Group added that they will “definitely [be opening more outlets] in shopping malls islandwide”, so you might just get an Eng’s outlet in your neighbourhood’s mall soon.

Popular wonton mee eatery Eng’s Wantan Noodle opened its first ever shopping mall outlet today at the basement of Eastpoint Mall. The original shop at 287 Tanjong Katong Road, was started by the late hawker Ng Ba Eng as a stall at Dunman Food Centre in the ’70s. It’s now owned by the folks behind the Lao Huo Tang restaurant chain, who told us they had decided to set up an outlet in a heartland mall near an MRT station to make it more “convenient” for customers to grab a bite “instead of going all the way to Tanjong Katong Road”.
