McDonald’s Purple Sweet Potato Waffle Cone & Kit Kat McFlurry Taste Test: Nice Or Not?
One’s a hit and the other’s a miss.
The gods of the Golden Arches have heard our prayers and as of yesterday, have bestowed us with the Insta-worthy Purple Sweet Potato Waffle Cone, previously available only in Hong Kong. However, unlike the HK version, Singapore’s iteration of the pretty lilac-hued soft-serve ice cream sits atop a plain cocoa-flavoured cone instead of a sexier Oreo-speckled one. Also making its debut here is the Kit Kat McFlurry, which combines vanilla soft-serve ice cream with chocolate sauce and bite-sized Kit Kat spheres. Are these two fun new desserts worth the calories? We dig in and tell you.
When we arrived at the Tiong Bahru Plaza outlet around noon, the restaurant was bustling, but the dessert kiosk had just a handful of customers queueing up — and not everyone was ordering the new ice creams. However, the kiosk’s business started to pick up after 20 minutes and most folks either ordered the classics or the Purple Sweet Potato Waffle Cone (which is only available at McDonald’s dessert kiosks).
We spotted at least two customers snapping shots of their purple swirls strategically positioned in front of the dessert standee, obviously #forthegram.
A paler shade of purple than the vivid Hong Kong version, this costs a dollar more than Mac's regular Vanilla cone, and even the Pandan Soft Serve Cone that launched in January. Why the price hike? We're guessing it's 'cos of the atas-looking cocoa waffle cone the ice cream is perched on. At first lick, our taste buds were hit with a saccharine wave. But interestingly, the sweetness soon neutralised to a moderate level after subsequent licks. True to the slightly floral, earthy notes of purple sweet potatoes, the flavour in the soft-serve was reminiscent of the yummy sweet potato lattes we’ve had in South Korea.
But what we enjoyed most was the toasty, crispy cocoa-flavoured cone — it had a hint of bitterness not unlike a mild dark chocolate, which complemented the purple sweet potato soft serve deliciously.
When we were at the kiosk, nobody ordered the Kit Kat McFlurry except us. If it wasn’t for the Kit Kat logo emblazoned on the cup, we would’ve had no idea that it contained any Kit Kat choc in it at all.
In fact, there were less than five raisin-sized Kit Kat orbs dotted within the ice cream — apparently, the tiny Kit Kat balls are exclusive to McDonald's (the choc brand sells larger spheres at supermarkets).
Plus they were soggy and tasted like nondescript chocolate-coated wafer balls from a random mama shop. Moreover, the whole thing was blitzed with chocolate fudge sauce, which made it too sweet. Quite disappointing, since we love Kit Kat.
Purple Sweet Potato Waffle Cone — Nice!
This baby may be pricier than other McDonald’s soft serves, but it’s worth the extra buck. The sweet potato flavour tastes surprisingly natural, and the yummy cocoa waffle cone it sits on is a winner.
Kit Kat McFlurry — Not nice!
Skip this and take a break with an actual bar of Kit Kat instead.
The Purple Sweet Potato Waffle Cone is available only at McDonald's dessert kiosks, while the Kit Kat McFlurry is available at all outlets, dessert kiosks & via McDelivery. Available after breakfast hours, while stocks last.
