Called ‘My Taste of Hongkong’, the menu is available only at McDonald’s outlets in Hongkong and Macau. It features traditional cha chaan teng and HK-style street fare with a fast food twist: a Bolognese & Fried Egg Angus Beef Burger; a Fried Onion Crispy Pork Cutlet Burger, Siew Mei-flavoured and Typhoon Shelter Crab-flavoured shaker fries, a Cookie & Milk Tea McFlurry ice cream and an Orange Punch. This is not Nicholas’ first rodeo with McDonald’s though. Last year, he also collaborated with the fast food giant in China to drop an exclusive spicy teppanyaki chicken burger with Sichuan sauce and squid ink buns, plus honey mustard shaker fries and sea salt lemon soda. The collab was a massive success, and his Hongkong fans had eagerly asked for their own version.Well, their dream came true. To promote Nic’s nosh, McDonald’s HK released a video clip which showed Nicholas sourcing for ingredients at local wet markets to create his bolognese burger, and sloppily devouring it in trance-like bliss while his new single ‘Sky’ played in the background.We kinda feel like eating the burger after watching the ad too. Don’t look at this on an empty stomach:

Items on the Hongkong menu are rolled out in phases. When you dine in at McDonald’s outlets, your food comes on a tray with a paper placemat emblazoned with Nic’s handsome face, scrunched in concentration as he puts the finishing touches on a burger like he’s building a NASA rocket.Our Hongkong pals who trooped down to try the current offerings gave their verdict below:

This large burger boasts a 130g thick-cut Angus beef patty heaped with cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise, a fried egg and a meaty dollop of house-made beef bolognese sauce. “Delicious and hearty,” our friend noted. “But it felt too heavy after a while ’cos there’s so much meat.” It kinda sounds to us like the souped-up version of our beloved Nasi Lemak Burger without the sambal chilli. It costs HK$46.50 ($8.20) for an Extra Value Meal with Shake Shake Fries and Orange Punch.

McDonald’s plain golden fries that comes with a little sachet of seasoning. Toss the fries and seasoning into the paper bag provided and shake vigorously to blend. “This thing tastes more like honey than siew mei (HK-style roast meat),” said our friend. “Maybe because traditional siew mei is coated with honey.”

“It’s too fizzy and too sweet. It’s supposed to have pineapple and mango flavouring in it too, but I can’t tell,” reported our friend.

McDonald’s Hongkong’s dessert version of the ubiquitous nai cha. Black tea-spiked vanilla ice cream is topped with broken chunky bits of milk tea cookies from Nicholas’ Chef Nic line of cookies. According to our man on the ground: “This tastes like good milk tea with a strong tea fragrance. You can tell it’s milk tea-flavoured right away. Still, it’s very, very sweet.”

It’s pretty creative of McDonald’s HK to team up with Chef Nic, and we are intrigued by the cute localised burgers, fries seasonings and McFlurry. The man does seem very enthusiastic about personally creating his fast food menu, and reportedly told the Hongkong media that the project had “made [him] a bit fat” after numerous taste tests. Our pal heard from the McDonald’s Hongkong staff that the remaining Fried Onion Crispy Pork Cutlet and Typhoon Shelter Crab-flavoured shaker fries will be launched “in the coming weeks”. Most folks know Nicholas Tse as an actor, singer and, erm, Faye Wong's beau and Cecilia Cheung’s ex. But in recent years he has also built a reputation for himself as Chef Nic, the F&B guru. Nicholas’ interest in cooking was said to have started in 2010, after he watched a pastry-making TV show and decided to try recreating the cream puffs and soufflés he saw on TV.

He has since developed his cooking hobby into a burgeoning food empire. Other than his own line of cookies called Chef Nic’s Cookies, Nicholas recently partnered McDonald’s Hongkong to create a special menu inspired by his favourite childhood Hongkong comfort food.
