Sheng Siong Now Sells 3 For $10 Red Prawn & $15/kg MSW Durians

Durian season has started.

It’s that time of the year again when durians are in season. The peak season for the king of fruits usually falls between December to March, and May to August. The latter months, being summertime, are considered the best time to enjoy durians, as the trees thrive due to the tropical heat and ample rainfall.

Last year, we at 8days.sg ranked 10 Mao Shan Wang deliveries, which you can check out here.

Supermarket chain Sheng Siong now also sells durians at its Bedok Central branch. On its Facebook page, Sheng Siong posted photos showing mountains of durians piled outside the supermarket.

2 of 4 3 for $10 Red Prawn durians

In one of the photos, a sign indicated Red Prawn durians going at three for $10. When we called up Sheng Siong’s Bedok outlet staff, we were informed that there were also more Red Prawn durians going at “five for $20”.

Red Prawn is a varietal characterised by its vivid yellow, almost orange flesh, which is sticky and creamy with less fibres.

  • 3 of 4 $2 durians

Customers were also picking through baskets of durians sold at $2 each, though Sheng Siong's staff tells us over the phone that she didn't see any of those durians — only Mao Shan Wang and Red Prawn left .

  • 4 of 4 There’s Mao Shan Wang

Sheng Siong is also selling Mao Shan Wang at $15/kg, which is a good price you usually only get when there’s a MSW supply glut.

Sheng Siong’s staff was unable to advise us on the durians’ provenance, but from the low price, we doubt the durians are from Pahang, Malaysia, which produces the best MSWs that are typically sold at a more premium price.

Still, these are some of the most wallet-friendly durians you can get in Singapore.
