On April 1, Burger King released its new Chocolate Whopper in BK outlets islandwide. Although it sounds like an April Fool's joke, it is a real, actual product comprising a Whopper slathered with chocolate sauce. Interesting, because this is not the first time BK has launched a chocolate-themed product in Singapore.

Last December, it gave us the sweet-savoury Mashed Up Fries ($2.90), a trio of fries, vanilla soft serve and chocolate fudge in a cute little cup, which was well-received by Singaporeans. But how does the Chocolate Whopper fare? Find out below.

1 of 2 Chocolate Whopper, $6.40 a la carte, from $7.90 for a set meal

At first glance, the Chocolate Whopper is wrapped in paper like a regular BK Whopper. But it's very, very different from the classic burger.

The most obvious difference is that there is so. Much. Chocolate. Sauce. The excess sauce drips onto the burger's wrapper when we unwrap it. We bite into the burg and the sweet maroon-hued sauce immediately coats our mouth like Pennywise's lipstick.

The fudgy chocolate sauce (similar to the Mashed Up Fries') is mildly runny and fairly sweet, but we couldn’t taste it much because the other savoury ingredients, such as the juicy beef patty, onions and tomatoes in the burger, quickly overpower the choc flavour. And so we're left with a Whopper that just happens to be sweeter with a lot more sauce.

2 of 2 Should you try it?

As with all fast food fads, we say this Chocolate Whopper is a conversation starter worth trying for the 'gram. But don't expect the same blissful flavour union as Mashed Up Fries, which had exceeded our expectations in its tastiness. Give us the delish classic Whopper any day.

Available from now till April 15 via the Burger King App and digital kiosks at Burger King outlets islandwide. www.burgerking.com.sg.
