Tendon Kohaku Founder Opens New Japanese Rice ‘Sando’ Kiosk With Unagi & Beef Options
The burger-style rice sando is a popular snack in Japan.
The Westerners have their burgers, and the Japanese riff is the rice sando, a sandwich-burger hybrid where the ‘buns’ are made from moulded rice. It’s the specialty of new Plaza Singapura takeaway kiosk #ricesando, which soft-opened today (Nov 19) offering the sarnie in eight flavours like unagi and hamburg.

#ricesando is co-owned by Yamada Kazuki, who founded the popular Tendon Kohaku restaurant chain. He opened the kiosk together with Tamoya Udon and mazesoba specialist Menya Kokoro’s owner Koga Akihiro, and Singaporean Serene Ang, the boss of Taiwanese street food chain Snackz It! and castella cake brand Ah Mah Homemade Cakes.

The sandos at #ricesando are served warm. They’re made with Hokkaido yumeprika rice, known for its soft, sticky texture and sweetness, and wrapped with Fukuoka nori (Japanese dried seaweed).

Prices start from $4.60 for the Tuna Corn Sando, which is stuffed with a tuna mayo and corn filling. You can top up $1.50 to add a fried egg or cheese, or $4.80 for a set with a drink plus your choice of karaage, French fries, coleslaw or pork-and-vegetable tonjiri miso soup (the sides are priced at $3.80 each a la carte).
