Eric Tsang, 68, was appointed TVB’s deputy general manager in January amidst talk that the Hongkong broadcaster was struggling financially. At that time, netizens weren't sure if the veteran actor was up to the task.

Eight months later, Eric was promoted to general manager following reports that he has “reinvigorated” the station.

In a recent interview, Eric shed light on why he decided to accept the managerial role at his age and what his plans for the station are.

“Everyone thought that I would have fun for half a year and quit thereafter, said Eric. [Those who said that] must think that I’m really capable as leaving this position means that I’ve done what I was hired for, and that I’ve found a suitable person to hand over the reins to.”

He added that he too hopes that he can resign “as soon as possible” and that he’s been giving himself “too much stress [by taking on] the never-ending amount of work” that comes with his position.

“When I was 65, I told myself that I’d spend the next decade traveling and having fun. I wouldn’t have guessed that I would tie myself down to TVB,” he said. “Times are different and TVB isn’t the only channel around now. I realised that the task that I committed myself to is tougher than I imagined [but] I hope to see a better TVB [in the future].”

Eric also revealed that he's taken a pay cut from his days as an actor, adding that Wong Cho Lam, who is now TVB's Chief Creative Officer, is in a worse position than [he is] .

He’s supposed to earn big bucks in the mainland. In comparison, [the decrease in my income] is nothing,” said Eric.

Cho Lam, 41, is reportedly wooing stars from the station's heyday, such as Evergreen Mak, back to the station.
