Gigi Lai, Whose Net Worth Has Gone Up By S$56mil, Praised For Taking The Subway With Her Daughter
Oh, and she’s also married to a billionaire.
Former actress Gigi Lai may have married into some serious money (her billionaire hubby Patrick Ma’s family owns Oriental Press Group, the largest media group in Hongkong), but she certainly hasn’t been living like some idle tai tai.
In 2008, the ageless Gigi — she turns an unbelievable 50 on October 1 — retired from showbiz to take over her younger brother Stephen’s cosmetics business Cosmax after he was seriously injured in a car accident.
Fast forward to today, and the biz has now grown into the Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed Miricor Enterprises Holdings. Chinese tech giant Meitu was recently reported to have acquired thousands of shares in the company, which in turn boosted Gigi’s net worth by a whopping HK$319mil (S$55.6mil).
In short, the woman is bloody rich, but it looks like that hasn’t stopped her from doing things you’d think the uber-wealthy would prefer to avoid. Like taking the subway.
On Monday (Sep 27), Gigi posted a few pictures of herself taking the Hongkong MTR, along with the caption, “Next stop ___?”. Internet sleuths have deduced that she might have been travelling from Central station towards Admiralty.
Thanks to her simple but elegant outfit and mask, the other commuters didn’t seem to recognise the star, who was accompanied by one of her three daughters.
Then again, folks in this city are probably already used to the sight of Chow Yun Fat taking the train and Maggie Cheung shopping at roadside stalls
Just like the time Aaron Kwok’s wife Moka Fang was praised for flying economy, netizens kept gushing over how “down-to-earth” Gigi is.
Other comments include: “Even a goddess takes the subway!”, “You can even run into Gigi Lai while taking the subway in Hongkong, I’m so envious”, and the very smooth “The next stop is in my heart!”.
