'I never retired': Ex TVB actress Flora Chan, who is pursuing a PhD, not ruling out TVB return

The actress, whose last drama was 2018’s Watch Out, Boss, has been studying for her PhD for the past eight years and wants to complete it soon.

Ex TVB actress Flora Chan, 52, who was hailed as one of the five fa dans of TVB in the ‘90s, could be returning to TVB. The actress took a step back from acting in 2008 to focus on her family, and went on to pursue other interests.

From 2012 to 2017, Flora worked as a English lecturer for an education centre in Shenzhen, while simultaneously pursuing a PhD in English at the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Education. She is still studying for her PhD, and is currently working with the University of Hong Kong for an educational project.

Flora also appeared in a couple of dramas and productions, including an education-themed interview talk show, After School, that she hosted in 2019. Her last drama was Watch Out, Boss in 2018.

Recently, Flora was a special guest at the Memories Beyond Horizon — TVB OST Concert in Macau on March 25, and her appearance gave rise to rumours that she might just be ready to make her showbiz comeback.

Flora's duet with co-star-turned-friend Bowie Lam was really well-received.

This is what Flora said when asked about a potential comeback.

“I never retired. It’s just that I turned my focus to education in the past few years 'cos I wanted to do well in that aspect. I’ve always liked acting, singing, so if there’s a chance, I’ll definitely continue doing so. What’s important is to participate in meaningful shows,” she said.

When asked if she would ever return to TVB, Flora did not rule out the possibility, though she did admit that she doesn’t have much free time.

“I wish to do something meaningful, with so many different [things to juggle] and only 24 hours in a day, I want to focus on what I’m doing right now, to complete it to the best of my abilities.”

Flora of many talents.

In a previous interview, Flora shared that she wants to focus on completing her PhD.

“I've been studying for it for the past eight years and I wish to complete it soon so that I can contribute more to different fields. Regardless of whether it’s in English, or in terms of personal growth, social emotional skills, things like these which are more holistic when you think about growth, I’m interested in all these,” she shared in a mix of Mandarin and English.
