Eclipsing a heartthrob like Huang Xiaoming at a public event sounds like a pretty tall order, especially for a non-celeb, but it’s something that Liu Zhongwei aka “China’s Most Handsome Bodyguard” once managed to accomplish without even trying.

In 2014, Xiaoming and his wife — then girlfriend — Angelababy attended the grand opening of their bubble tea store, attracting a lively crowd of fans and onlookers who came to catch a glimpse of the superstar couple.

Walking protectively beside Xiaoming was Zhongwei, who unwittingly became the main focus of many media headlines the next day such as “Huang Xiaoming’s bodyguard steals the spotlight” and “The bodyguard is more handsome than Huang Xiaoming”.

After the event, Zhongwei was never seen with Xiaoming again, leading to speculations that the former may have been “fired” by the latter, supposedly out of jealousy.

Or perhaps Zhongwei was just part of a security team that Xiaoming engaged for that day only?

In any case, the bodyguard went on to work for another Chinese actor, Deng Chao, which is how he got to know Guo Si, the manager of Deng Chao’s wife Sun Li… and the woman he would eventually marry.

According to reports, Zhongwei started out as a model but unfortunately failed to make it big despite his height and resemblance to Japanese actor Shun Oguri.

He switched careers to become a bodyguard and earned the nickname “China’s Most Handsome Bodyguard” thanks to his good looks.
