The Mums Of Seow Sin Nee & Juin Teh Didn’t Recognise Them When They Went Back To M’sia As A Surprise After Being Away For 2 Years

The Mediacorp artistes also ran into issues before getting on their VTL trips, which they documented in the latest episode of #JustSwipeLah.

The launch of the land and air Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTL) between Singapore and Malaysia has finally allowed families separated by the Causeway to be reunited… provided they fulfil all the necessary requirements, of course.

In this week’s episode of #JustSwipeLah, Mediacorp artistes Seow Sin Nee and Juin Teh, who also host the bite-sized infotainment series, documented their brief trips back to Malaysia for the first time in almost two years… and they both ran into similar hiccups.

According to Juin, who took the land VTL to Johor Bahru, she had problems submitting her negative ART result to the MySafeTravel portal as she did not have it digitally authenticated and converted into a QR code via the Notarise website.

Fortunately, the 31-year-old was still granted access through customs as she had printed out the complete set of documents.

Like Juin, Sin Nee ran into some issues while she was checking in at Changi Airport and “was so afraid” that she wouldn’t be able to travel home.

The 26-year-old told 8days.sg over WhatsApp that, just like Juin, she was unable to upload her vaccination certificate and negative PCR result to the MySafeTravel portal as they were in the wrong format.

“I panicked ‘cos I was waiting for the email [with the correct QR codes] and I only had an hour left before boarding time,” she recalled.

In the end, she only managed to get her vaccination certificate verified on time, but she was still able to get on the plane with the physical copy of her PCR test result.

“I thought I wouldn’t be able to make it,” she said. “I nearly booked a Grab to go back to my place in Singapore and cry. (Laughs)

But she made it!

But she made it!

When Juin and Sin Nee arrived in Malaysia, they got ready to surprise their families, who were unaware that they would be coming home.

And to make things even more interesting and entertaining, both girls disguised themselves — which was pretty easy to do ‘cos of their masks — and pretended to be staff serving their parents drinks to see if they would know it’s their own daughters.

Hilarious spoiler alert: Their mothers didn’t recognise them at all.

“Even when I’m outside filming, people know it’s me even when I’m in elderly make-up ‘cos of my voice! But my own parents can’t recognise my voice!” cried Juin after pouring tea for her unsuspecting mum.

Mama Teh even casually remarked: “Juin would come here often if she were here. She likes to eat this kind of cake.”

When Papa Teh pointed out that Juin — whom they still didn’t recognise at that point — looked like their daughter, Mama Teh said: “Oh yes, she does! Maybe it’s cos your mouth is covered by the mask, so her dad thinks you look like her.”

Mama Teh finally realised it was Juin herself when the latter quipped, “No, Juin is prettier” and pulled down her mask.

Sin Nee, who posed as a waitress at a Japanese restaurant, also went unrecognised by her mum despite going up to her at least three times and even putting a napkin on her lap.

In fact, Mama Seow even whispered to her dining companion (Sin Nee’s eldest sister, who was in on the whole thing), “This waitress is strange”… not long before Sin Nee took off her mask for the big reveal.

“When did you come back!? When did you come back!?” Mama Seow exclaimed, whacking her daughter on the arm.

She later jokingly asked if she could do the take again as she “really didn’t expect” Sin Nee to be waiting for her there.
