Netizens Think Wang Leehom Hasn’t Been Officially Cancelled In China 'Cos He's Patriotic

His latest song was one of the soundtracks of Chinese documentary The Forbidden City.

When Wang Leehom’s ex-wife Lee Jinglei exposed him for supposedly being an unfaithful and promiscuous sex addict with narcissistic personality disorder (among other very unflattering accusations), many expected that to be the end of the Mandopop singer’s career, especially in China.

After all, the country is known for its swift and merciless treatment of celebs who have done something — or many things — wrong, blacklisting “tainted stars” not just for legitimate criminal misdeeds but also for anything else deemed immoral or offensive.

Is it the end of Leehom’s career?

Surprisingly, that doesn’t seem to be the case for Leehom, 45, although of course, the authenticity of this “tainted stars” list hasn’t actually been verified and was purportedly even debunked by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

In any case, that hasn’t stopped netizens from speculating on why Leehom was let off the hook — at least officially — in China.

One theory is that it may have something to do with how he has expressed his patriotism and love for the CCP through his songs and performances in the past, earning him praise from Chinese state media at the time.

For example, he was seen singing along to ‘Ode to the Motherland’, which is sometimes dubbed China’s “second national anthem”, with Jackie Chan at the 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan.

In addition, his latest song ‘Heaven and Earth Dragon’, which was released just weeks before Jinglei’s damning post, was one of the soundtracks of Chinese documentary The Forbidden City and was very popular among listeners.

In other news, reports claim that Leehom is staying calm despite all that’s happening around — and to — him, and that he has “no hatred in [his] heart” for his ex-wife, only fear.

He has also been heeding his lawyer’s advice to never be alone with Jinglei without another approved adult, and is said to have even changed his phone number.
