A 20-year-old girl of Pakistani descent has recently caught the attention of netizens thanks to videos of her speaking a Chinese dialect fluently.
Based in China’s Henan province, Fan Zihe, who goes by the nickname Xiao Hei Ni (or Little Black Girl) was adopted by her Chinese parents 20 years ago when they were working in Pakistan.
In 2021, she posted a video of herself eating Henan delicacies while conversing in Henan dialect. The video quickly went viral and she now has over 546,000 followers on Weibo.
However, her fluency in the dialect has gotten some netizens to question whether her videos are edited and scripted by a social media company.
Denying the allegations, Zihe said she is happy to see all the online praise about her mixed upbringing.
She also identifies as Chinese.
“I have lived in Fanzhuang Village, Ruzhou City, Henan since I was a child,” said Zihe.
Zihe also added that even though her looks garner strange stares from people who don’t know her, her parents still chose to bring her up the best they could.
“My family is not rich, but my parents have never treated me badly. They love me well in their own way,” she said.
Naturally, media companies have come knocking on her door with fancy endorsements and contracts, but Zihe has turned all of them down saying she doesn’t want to be commercialised this early on.
Other than a few modelling jobs, Zihe mostly makes a living farming in her village and helping with the family business, allowing her to make 4,000 yuan (S$767) a month.
However, Zihe has mentioned that she has her sights on being a live streamer and to sell her village’s agricultural products while promoting Henan as a tourist destination.
Her ultimate dream? Buying a house nearer to the city for her parents when they are older.
“I’m still young, so I have to fight for my family,” she said.
