“Come, come! I am your driver for today!” chirps Constance Song as she welcomes 8days.sg into one of ComfortDelGro’s learner cars.

We’re here at the ComfortDelGro Driving Centre to watch the mother-of-one show off her newly-acquired bike riding skills, as well as to test out the centre’s latest Driver Development Tool, which is a visual-based software that allows instructors to analyse the performance of learner drivers as well as to give them constructive feedback.

1 of 9 We'll give her five stars

“Aiyah, once you’ve been driving for too long, you will get complacent and make mistakes,” says the 43-year-old, who says she got her driving license after two tries, as we shuffle into the car.

On our 15-minute ride, Constance laments about road bullies and how she thinks “honking for no reason” is rude. “People always scold me on the road and give me the stink eye! I don’t even know what I did wrong! I hate people who honk at me, I really hate it! You only honk when you are about to get into an accident! It’s so rude to anyhow honk!”

While we're on the road, another driver suddenly waves at us, which triggers Constance. “I always get bullied. People are so impatient. So many nuisance drivers!” she says.

“Um actually, someone recognised you and waved…” the instructor says. “Oh, I thought he wanted to scold me,” Constance replies sheepishly.

Back at the centre, we move on to part two of the event, where we get to see Constance show off her motorbike skills with Ah Ge Li Nanxing. While she fumbles around with her gear, she tells us that she took “slightly more than half a year” to get her motorbike license, but hasn’t ridden since ‘cos she’s been “super busy” with her restaurant, tapas and sake bar Bam!, and her two-year-old daughter. But more on the kid later.

  • 3 of 9 Safety first!

Constance tells us that she found learning how to ride a motorbike very difficult” because it's for young people.

    It’s too dangerous!” she says.

So why did she even bother, we asked.

“[It was] purely for work,” says Constance. “I think it would benefit my job. If I ever get a role that requires me to ride a motorcycle, I would be able to do it. But for now, I don’t plan to buy a motorbike! But if there are people who want to buy me one as a present… I don’t mind!” she laughs.

However, her loved ones aren't all that keen about her riding on a motorbike. Like her baby daddy, for example.

When he heard that she was going to learn how to ride a motorcycle, his response was a resounding “No”.

“He said Are you crazy? Are you out of your mind?” Constance tells us, her eyes widening like saucers. “But I assured him that I just wanted to upgrade my skills! (Laughs) Even my mother refused to let me learn!”

4 of 9 Constance with her daughter

The low-profile Tanglin actress gave birth to her daughter in May 2017 without much fanfare. While most celebs normally put their personal lives on some sort of public display on social media, Constance has somehow managed to remain real private about her kid’s name and face, the identity of her daughter's dad and even her marital status.

When we ask if she's married to her baby daddy, Constance cheekily giggles, “Ah! I don’t tell you!”

As for her kid's name, Constance simply says we can refer to her daughter as Baby O .

There's a reason Constance is pulling a Joanne Peh with regards to her daughter.

“Actually, I don’t wish to reveal anything [about my kid] ‘cos I’m afraid that she’ll get bullied in the future. That’s what happened to my sister in school when everyone knew that I was her sister. My daughter’s play school teachers know me, but the kids there are too young to understand that so I don’t think the bullying will happen. But it’s a different story in primary school which is when bullying starts so I just hope to avoid all of that,” she explains.

But besides that, she seems quite willing to talk about Baby O’s personality, even telling us about the kid's quirks.

“I cannot do without a helper!” confesses Constance, who shares the same birthday as her daughter. “I will go crazy. When my helper went back for three weeks, I almost went crazy! My baby cries a lot and I really suffered then. What’s worse was that she fell sick for two out of the three weeks and I had to rush here and there just to bring her to the doctor. When she’s sick, her mood is very bad. She’d lose her temper, refuse to eat… she would also always say “I don’t like!” and “I don’t want!” She’s very fussy. She wouldn't want her normal blanket. Instead she wants the big one and I must give it her.

Also, I can’t leave her pacifier anywhere. It has to be at a specific location. I don’t know if this is how her personality is going to be or it’s just the terrible twos!

    6 of 9 Mother-daughter bonding time

Funnily, Constance thinks her daughter takes after her the most and that Baby O is basically “a reflection” of herself.

(Laughs) Actually, she’s quite like me lah. I see myself in her so I think I need to change ‘cos I don't want her to grow up spoiled. She speaks very well and tells you her likes and dislikes. She also has a very strong character and knows what she wants. She’s quite independent too. When I want to teach her things like how to brush her teeth, she refuses to listen and wants to do everything by herself. Even when I want to feed her!” Constance laughs.

Baby O may have only just started to walk and talk, but she’s already attending school, or what Constance calls a “playgroup”. In fact, the actress reveals that Baby O's dad is “the playmate” while she’s “the disciplinarian” who has already thought about all the enrichment classes she wants to send Baby O to in the future.

    7 of 9 A cool Tiger mum?

“I do think about sending her to piano classes and what not, but I think girls who play the drums are very cool! So I want her to learn that! But I think I'll let her try the piano first ‘cos it's easier to start. I don’t think she would be able to handle the drums ‘cos she’s too small to reach the pedals. I want to let her try all the things I didn't get to when I was young, like golf. But then again, I don't know if she’d like it lah. But the one thing I won’t send her to is ballet. I’d rather send her to hip hop classes 'cos that’s what I wanted,” says Constance.

“If not stay at home and do what? Learn from the helper? (Laughs) Go to school is good lah. Can socialise and learn how to colour,” she says.
