Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Apr 9-16)
All the photos that made us hungry this week.
This week, Pierre Png and Andrea De Cruz made time to catch up with friends over yummy curry rice, Terence Cao introduced Zoe Tay and Chen Xiuhuan to his fave ban mian, and Li Nanxing and Mark Lee checked out ex-Antoinette chef Pang Kok Keong's new Swiss rolls. Read on for more.
What they ate: A most substantial spread
Yummy factor: From locally-inspired Swiss rolls by chef Pang Kok Keong (founder of patisserie chain Antoinette) to pumpkin puree porridge with the prettiest golden hue, Hainanese curry rice and sticks of chunky satay, Nanxing and Mark got to try just about everything retro-themed eatery The Hainan Story’s latest 24-hour outlet at Hotel Boss. We've personally tried the Swiss rolls and our favourites are the soft and fluffy Mao Shan Wang durian, pandan and Belgian chocolate rolls, which come with a thick layer of rich filling. Yum.
What they ate: Meatless pho
Yummy factor: Both Cynthia and Meijiao slurped up Vietnamese pho of a different kind at The Kind Bowl, where shredded chicken is replaced with seitan, a gluten-based alternative. Served with grilled oyster mushrooms, herbs and a spritz of lime, the dish looked wholesome and delish.
What she ate: Chocolate soft serve
Yummy factor: When it comes to her guilty indulgence, it appears that Joanne is not one to share — not even with with her kids. Jokes aside, her double chocolate soft serve from Chocolate Origin looks like a decadent treat alright — especially so with that fancy cone.
What they ate: Beef noodles at Bedok Reservoir
Yummy factor: The Muttons couldn't be more jealous of folks living in the east. The herbal bowls of goodness from hawker stall Horiginal Beef Noodle have proved to be a fast favourite with both Class 95 jocks — the soupy version for Justin, and the dry one for Vernon. Either way, there’s no charge for extra noodles, and both options came generously laden with meatballs, tender beef slices and more.
What they ate: Curry rice
Yummy factor: Pierre and Andrea joined friends over at Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice for all things rich and flavourful — prawns, sotong, fried cutlets and more — to go with their mountain of rice drenched in curry. Talk about a satisfying meal.
What she ate: Colourful salad
Yummy factor: Whilst Jacelyn’s friend opted for the fish and chips at PS Cafe, Jacelyn went down the clean route and ate a rainbow of greens instead — a colourful salad mix of sliced beetroot, broccoli florets, pumpkin and more.
What they ate: Ban mian from China Whampoa Homemade Noodle
Yummy factor: Another week, another hike and makan session. This time, the celeb pals trooped to Whampoa Drive Market and Food Centre for some dry ban mian. Xiuhuan was so impressed by how generous they are with the ingredients — her bowl came with huge prawns, meat balls, fish, plus extra fried ikan bilis — and thin the mee hoon kueh slices are. No wonder it's a fave of Terence.
What she ate: Jelly flower cake
Yummy factor: Fann has expanded her baking repertoire to include 3D jelly flower cakes. Featuring hyper-realistic blossoms in the sweetest hues, the cake is not only pretty, but also yummy too, well according to hubby Christopher Lee. Hopefully Zed won't run away from this?
What she ate: Nasi ambeng
Yummy factor: Nurul tucked into a most sumptuous nasi ambeng platter from Hilton Singapore when she broke fast with her family, and the hearty spread included familiar classics such as beef rendang, sambal chilli lala with petai, and ayam masak merah, which is usually consumed during festive occasions. Good for two, the set even came with complimentary kueh to conclude the meal on a sweet note.
What she ate: Waffles
Yummy factor: Forget the usual #OOTDs, Tracy takes hers with yummy Belgian waffles. Having said that, the dessert must have been a real distraction as she attempts to get the perfect shot. We bet she couldn’t wait to tuck into it with the accompanying scoops of ice cream and fresh fruits.
What she ate: Fusion dishes
Yummy factor: Michelle celebrated her birthday (Apr 22) in advance with friends — including Oon Shu An and Love, Bonito co-founder Viola Tan — at cocktail bar Lil' Tiger, and of course the celebratory meal had to have her favourite eats. There was the must-have uni ebi burger that’s only available seasonally, wagyu hanger steak, chicken neck tacos and more. Michelle also got to cut her first birthday cake of the year — a custom confection by Bob the Baker Boy featuring all things close to her heart.
What she ate: Yong tau foo
Yummy factor: Yvonne spent an entire day in the kitchen whipping up trays of Hakka-style yong tau foo for her loved ones, and the wide variety of fried goodies — think stuffed tau kwa and eggplant, fried beancurd skin and more — look absolutely tempting. In fact, they were an excellent complement to the homemade fried noodles (topped with the cutest bear-shaped fish cake) from good friend, Mandopop singer Fish Leong.
What they ate: Peranakan lunch at Rumah Baba Fred
Yummy factor: Lingling and Shinan met up with Xiuhuan for a leisurely Saturday lunch at the Peranakan restaurant, where they indulged in everything from beef rendang to assam fish and the resto’s signature ngoh hiang — perfect with the steamed blue pea rice.
What she ate: Ciabatta with spicy tuna
Yummy factor: Patricia put together her own sandwich with ciabatta she got from Swedish bakery Konditori, and a homemade chilli tuna filling with diced onions and a dash of lime juice. Well, the recipe is a winner for Patricia, albeit it being a little too spicy for her lips to handle.
What they ate: Conveyor belt sushi
Yummy factor: While it wasn’t fancy, the friends’ Japanese meal still looked pretty shiok. Amongst other things, Gerald went for aburi salmon rolls topped with mentaiko, while Yixi slurped up a comforting bowl of noodle soup. Gerald even took the opportunity to canvass votes for Yixi, who has been nominated for the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste at this Sunday's Star Awards.
What she ate: Fluffy pancakes
Yummy factor: Apple’s all for making her cheat meal a worthwhile one, and her choice of sin was a gorgeous stack of fluffy pancakes from Belle-Ville Pancake Café, complete with assorted berries sandwiched in between the layers, and made heavenly with Hokkaido cream and chocolate sauce.
What he ate: Thai food
Yummy factor: Pornsak met up with a good friend for supper at Golden Mile Complex in the wee hours, and boy was the spread sinful. Not only did Pornsak request for extra sugar and milk in his Thai iced tea, they also shared a deep-fried omelette, papaya salad, spicy pork rib soup and more.
What he ate: Hearty meal at Cafe One O
Yummy factor: Nick had a quick yet satisfying meal at Cafe One O before a hosting gig, and loved the combination of ginger chicken, spicy prawns, greens, and Thai-style fish cake. And while he didn’t touch his rice, he did take a couple of bites of his colleague’s fish and chips — probably prioritising his calorie intake.
What she ate: Sharing plates
Yummy factor: Although Jean and Glenn had popped by Don Ho to check out their new tiny bubbles bar, it was the food that truly caught our eye. Think splendid creations such as roasted watermelon, braised beef cheek, wood-fired carrots and more. And we’d probably request for a second serving of the chocolate lava pudding Jean savoured.
What she ate: Spanish-inspired feast
Yummy factor: Huge sangrias, decadent dishes and great company — that just about sums up Jade’s catch-up sesh with her cousin at Spanish restaurant Pura Brasa. And according to Jade, the grilled octopus, patatas bravas, and squid ink paella with Hokkaido uni are must-tries.
What she ate: Fried snacks
Yummy factor: From fried chicken and bubble tea courtesy of Sheila Sim and Zhang Yaodong respectively, to addictive chi ku crackers from bakery My Mum’s Cookies, Kimberly and her Live Your Dreams co-stars certainly weren’t left hungry on the job.
What she ate: Elegant eclairs
Yummy factor: Hazelle was surprised with a box of birthday eclairs from L'éclair Pâtisserie after a long day at work, and was ecstatic when she realised that the alphabets atop each of them form her name. Pleasant surprises aside, the lovely creations are a sight to behold, and probably taste as good as they look.
