For Joanne Peh, education, early-childhood education in particular, has always been something that she holds dear to her heart. And it shows in the way she engages with her two kids, Baby Qi and Qi Didi, whose faces have never really been shown on social media.

Joanne’s Instagram feed is often peppered with snaps of her indulging in artsy activities with five-year-old Baby Qi and three-year-old Qi Didi, but we were particularly piqued by the snaps of these adorable Halloween bird houses that made their way onto Joanne’s Instagram story last week.

1 of 4 Can you guess which birdhouse was made by Baby Qi, and which was made by Qi Didi?

When 8days.sg reached out to Joanne via WhatsApp, she readily shared more about the process behind these art pieces, writing: “It was very organic. We read a book about birds, questioned about where birds live, got them to draw what they thought, decided to make bird houses and as they were decorating it, I pulled out whatever I had, and googly eyes became popular. Which in turn looked very Halloween-ney. so they inspired me actually. (sic)”.

And it looks like Joanne’s definitely not a Tiger Mum when it comes to these projects preferring to let their creative juices run free instead of dictating the direction.

I always believe in child-led projects so instead of sticking hard and fast to the end goal, I'd allow the children to tell me how they would like to go about with it,” she added.

Having free rein over their own art projects seems to have shaped Baby Qi and Qi Didi into artists of their own, with Joanne sharing a rare insight into the personalities of her two kids when it comes to art.

I'd give my children the same materials and they will create differently. My son would pluck the leaves off a plastic tree and use it as ingredients for his play kitchen while my daughter would use the tree to design a maze,” she wrote.
