8 DAYS: How are you and what have you been up to?PAIGE CHUA: I’m currently working on a Toggle series called Playground, and from November, I’ll be going for wushu training for another Toggle drama, Close Your Eyes, which has Zheng Geping as executive producer.

This is your 10th anniversary in showbiz. What are some of your fondest memories so far?I will always remember my first drama, Just in Singapore. Back then, I wasn’t a Mediacorp artiste yet, and I was surprised when they gave me a supporting role alongside my all-time favourite actress, Chen Liping [who played my mother in the drama]. I was nervous and not sure how people would react to my character. But honestly, it really didn’t matter, because nobody knew me at that time. The script was good, and I was happy that my character was well-received and left a strong impression on the audience. It’s one of my fondest memories because Lin Xiuzhen is an anti-hero in a way. There was a lot of attention on that character, and I guess I was quite convincing as a bitch. A stylist even told me that she thought I was a bitch in real life too! (Laughs) You’re not at all! What do you think are some of the highlights of your career?Many people tell me that in the past three years since Against The Tide, I’ve been getting a lot of juicy roles and that my star is shining brighter than before. Right now, I’m more comfortable breaking out of my comfort zone and I enjoy becoming a different person every three months. This year alone, I’ve filmed You Can Be An Angel 3 and Blessings 2, and both characters are vastly different. That’s how you survive in this industry, you need to be bao ka liao (be able to do everything). Imagine if you’re watching me on screen and I constantly play the damsel in distress, you also will be sian, right? So you just gotta adapt and make yourself relevant.

What about the downs?It is when people criticise my shows. I used to be affected, but not so much now. The first five years were hard, because I’m an extremely private person and I get weirded out when people I don’t know come up and say hi to me. But now I understand that when people watch dramas, they get attached to my character and they feel like they know me, but they don’t. (Laughs) I’ve always been known to be a quiet person, which I don’t think is a bad thing. At times, there was also miscommunication with the stricter directors from Hongkong, but at the end of day, we’ve just got to work together and finish the show.

When you landed your first role, how did you feel? Why did you decide to join showbiz full-time?The results from Just In Singapore were really encouraging, so I decided to continue and see where this would take me. I am grateful that the EPs at Mediacorp saw my potential, and straight after my first show, they offered me another role in La Femme. Prior to Crime Busters x 2, I was only a freelance actress.

How do you think you’ve changed as a person in these 10 years?Just like anyone else, I’ve had life experiences, and it’s up to you to become stronger. I may be highly critical of myself, but I make sure that no matter what I do, I don’t hurt the people around me. I am still learning to take care of myself as well — I used to be more short-tempered. I was a control freak, and would get frustrated if things don’t go the way I want them to. Work-wise, I used to get flustered at slight changes in the script, but right now, I am more open to changes in both work and life.

So were you open about your scenes from Mightiest Mother-In-Law being turned into GIFs?Well, I didn’t get the Best Actress Award despite that breakthrough role, but I guess keyboard warriors got a kick out of it. (Laughs)

Yes, you landed a Best Actress nomination but didn’t win. Were you expecting to snag the trophy?Honestly, I was not expecting to win at all. I was rooting for Liping-jie, and we all wished that someone could’ve won something for Mightiest Mother-In-Law. The show won the Best Script, but that was during the Technical Category awards [which was not broadcasted]. It was the best-rated drama but it didn't manage to garner any awards during the main Star Awards show, and that was such a letdown for the team. Maybe there’ll be a season 2?

Does your family ever pressure you to settle down and have kids?No, not at all. I’m quite happy with where I am right now. After seeing my sister being all stressed out with my niece, I don’t think I want my own kids. I only like to play with kids for a while and then give them back to their mums. I’m very busy.

Even after 10 years, you still seem very awkward with the media. Do you think you’ll ever get used to this?Actually I feel like I’ve just gotten used to it. I’ll always be the same Paige Chua. My characters live a more colourful and high-profile life than I do, and I hope they can stay in audiences’ hearts for a long time to come.
