’90s Screen Beauty Chingmy Yau’s 17-Year-Old Daughter Is Gorgeous But Boy, Is It Hard To Be The Kid Of A Famous Star
Truth be told, it was never going to be easy when your mum’s one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the big screen.
Truth be told, it was never going to be easy when your mum’s one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the big screen.
When you’re the kid of a famous person, you either revel in the attention and make the most out of it, or you shrink into the background and hope to live your own life away from the spotlight. You also have to brace yourself for the inevitable comparisons that people will make between you and your parent (or parents) for, well, the rest of eternity. Even more so when your mum is known as one of the greatest beauties of Asian cinema.
If you were a fan of Hongkong movies in the late ’80s and ’90s, chances are high that you would have harboured a major crush on Chingmy Yau — the former 1987 Miss Hongkong contestant who went on to define the overt, giddy sexiness of the era. She was one of Hongkong’s most in-demand leading ladies along with Maggie Cheung, Rosamund Kwan and Carina Lau, and she had starred in some of the decade's biggest and most popular movies like Royal Tramp, God of Gamblers 2, City Hunter and Future Cops.
Chingmy retired from showbusiness in 1999 after marrying Sham Kar Wai, a businessman who founded Hongkong’s I.T fashion brand, and she's been living a life of luxury since. The couple now have three daughters, Shum Yuet, 17, Shum Yat, 15, and Shum Sing, eight.
Of their three girls, eldest daughter Shum Yuet is by far the most talked-about, mostly because of her resemblance to Chingmy. The teen recently made an appearance at London Fashion Week, where she walked the runway for Izzue, a brand under her dad’s I.T label. Her participation in the fashion show once again drew comparisons between her and her mum, with some netizens saying that Shum Yuet, while a beauty in her own right, lacks the X-factor Chingmy oozes.
It didn’t help that for the show, Shum Yuet was sporting a hairstyle similar to the one her mum practically owned back in the day.
There has also been a lot of talk about how Chingmy and Shum Yuet look like more sisters than mother and daughter, which if you think about it, is a really compliment for the 51-year-old retired star. Not so much for Shum Yuet.
But don’t you worry for the teenager. Ever since she first made the public sit up and take notice of her when she accompanied her mum to Leo Ku’s wedding in 2015, netizens have proclaimed Shum Yuet as “the most beautiful second generation star”. And it seems a showbiz career is a certainty… if she wants it that is.
Chingmy recently told reporters at an event that Shum Yuet has been complaining about the paparazzi staking out at her school and that she’s very unhappy about getting photographed everywhere she goes… even if it’s just dinner with her dad.
It also comes as no surprise she is reportedly a big deal in the international school she studies at in Hongkong and that she has been attracting suitors left, right and centre.
Earlier this year, there was talk that Shum Yuet is dating a schoolmate who resembles Korean drama hunk Lee Min Ho, a relationship that Chingmy allegedly frowns upon. So much so that the ex-star has reportedly taken to fetching her daughter to and from school so as to reduce the amount of time the young lovebirds get to meet. Chingmy has also reportedly filled Shum Yuet’s free time with extra-curricular classes and family activities so her daughter can focus on her school work instead.
Who knew that sex goddess Chingmy Yau would one day become an over-protective mother?
