’90s Taiwanese Actor Ma Jingtao Asked Fans To Rate His New Selfie And Some Of The Comments Were So Savage

Well, he asked for it.

We wonder if Taiwanese actor Ma Jingtao (also known as Steve Ma) knew what he was getting into when he recently posted a selfie and asked his followers to rate it. After all, the 58-year-old isn’t exactly the young heartthrob he once was, and the Internet is notoriously full of… not-very-nice people.

The photo and open invitation were shared on his Weibo last Friday (May 29) and for some reason, Jingtao’s lips, which used to be known for being plump and pillowy, appeared uncharacteristically thin. This became a major talking point among both netizens and the press.

“Those aren’t his sexy thick lips at all!” sighed one netizen.

One media outlet even said that Jingtao now has a “little cherry mouth”, a compliment used to describe small and delicate lips on women. However, they also pointed out that it could be a matter of the angle and his facial expression.

Then there were those who dutifully followed Jingtao’s instructions and unleashed their candid thoughts about his picture. While there were plenty of kind folks who gave him full marks and praised him for his improved selfie-taking skills, others were, um, less forgiving.

“You don’t look so old in pictures taken by other people, but you look like you’ve aged at least five years in your selfies,” read one scathing remark. A few straight-up rated his selfie a grand total of zero points, but Jingtao clearly wasn’t going to let such negativity ruin his day and graciously replied to his haters with a heart emoji.

Once known as one of Taiwan’s hottest actors (in terms of both looks and popularity), Jingtao has shifted his focus to his career in China in recent years, with rumours claiming that he enjoys a cushy career as a S$59,000-per-song wedding singer. Last month, he was caught up in nasty allegations that he had been living off his ex-wife’s family, but he fought back with a lawyer’s letter.
