Veteran Hongkong actress Yu Mo Lin, who is severely ill with a rare type of blood cancer, is now in stable condition.

According to media reports, the 83-year-old, was transferred to the general ward last month after spending weeks in the ICU.

Though Mo Lin is conscious, she has to rely on a feeding tube as she is unable to eat and breathe on her own. She is also unable to speak as she is currently intubated.

Sadly, just when things appear to be improving, Mo Lin’s mother, Dang Mei Mei, passed away last Sunday (Dec 7). The former actress, who had been living in a nursing home in Los Angeles, reportedly died of illness. She was 99.

Though Mo Lin and her mother have been estranged for years, Mo Lin's friends have decided not to break the news to her for fear that it would affect her condition.

Dang Mei Mei, whose real name is Dang Siu Yin, had Mo Lin when she was just 16. In 1947, she left Guangzhou to move to Hongkong alone to develop her acting career. Mo Lin once revealed that her mum favoured sons to daughters and she was passed around from relative to relative when she was a child.

When Mo Lin’s dad had another family, she moved to Hongkong to live with her mum. However, they rarely kept in contact after Mei Mei remarried. When Mei Mei retired in 1992, she settled down in the United States and later moved into a nursing home.
