Chang Fei & Fei Yu-Ching’s Buddhist Nun Sister Has Reportedly Made S$47K After Making Her Showbiz Comeback Just 2 Days Ago
She has been making appearances on talks shows and home shopping channels.
Looks like Chang Fei and Fei Yu-ching’s elder sister Jenny Fei’s showbiz comeback is off to a promising start.
Following her announcement that she had settled her NT$30mil (S$1.4mil) debt and that she's making her comeback on Monday (Sep 7), the former singer-turned-Buddhist nun, who is now known as Venerable Heng Shu, wasted no time in getting back to work and has been making the rounds on the talk show circuit.
According to Apple Daily, after her virtual press conference wrapped, the 70-year-old layered a shirt over her Buddhist robes and made her way with popular host Zhan Chang Yu to a TV station where she appeared on a talk show.
Since her big announcement, Heng Shu has been highly sought after by TV producers and has gone on three talk shows so far. The appearance fee for each episode ranges from NT$15,000 (S$703) to NT$20,000 (S$937), which, according to reports, is a pretty good rate for such shows.
A friend of Heng Shu’s revealed the nun doesn’t charge a specific fee for such appearances and just “leaves it to fate”, though the production unit will usually give her the highest remuneration.
According to reports, Heng Shu seemed to suffer from performance jitters — it has been decades since she last appeared on TV after all — and would get excited when she saw other guests or hosts, thus affecting her performance. She also requested to retake one scene, which caused the segment to overrun by 15 minutes. It's said that she was also star struck and would ask the hosts for autographs.
In addition, three home shopping channels have also come knocking on her door and the appearance rate they offered her was around NT$300,000 (S$14,000), which according to industry standard, is among the highest for such shows.
Heng Shu has said she is open to promoting products as long as she they are things that she likes, for example, essential oils and fragrances, though what she really hopes to endorse are cars, tea and real estate. She also hopes to host her own talk show. All in all, it's estimated that she has raked in NT$1mil (S$47,000) from her recent appearances on talk shows and home shopping channels.
In March, Chang Fei and Fei Yu-ching threatened to cut off all ties with Heng Shu after she borrowed from more than 20 loan sharks and racked up NT$30mil (S$1.4 mil) in debts. This is on top of the NT$200mil (S$9.5mil) they have shelled out over the past 40 years, though Heng Shu has denied this.
