Sure, he may have shot to fame ’cos of his roles in iconic TVB dramas like The Bund and Man in the Net but don’t expect the screen legend to share your love for those dramas. In fact, he hasn’t even watched a single episode of any of the TV serials that he had shot early in the ’70s and ’80s. “There was once I went hiking with [veteran actress Nina Paw] and she asked me, ‘Did you watch The Bund [when it was airing on TV]?’ I told her that at that time, I was like fighting a war at TVB! I was filming non-stop, when would I have time to watch TV?” he says. “Even now, I have not watched a single ep of The Bund. How was my performance in it? I have no idea. Only later did I realise why [I don’t watch my own shows]. Stanley Ho opens casinos but he doesn’t gamble himself. An actor doesn’t need to watch his own shows. A singer doesn’t need to listen to his own.

Fact: Chow Yun Fat is a big fan of selfies. Just Google ‘Chow Yun Fat selfie’ and you can see many photos of the star posing cheek to cheek with random strangers. And there’s good reason why he’s so trigger happy. “If you can make someone happy, it is considered a blessing to yourself too,” he says. “There are many unhappy things in this world and if you can make someone for just that short moment, then it’s like I’m a boy scout and I’m doing a good deed.”

His fondness for hiking is legendary and he even has taken celebs like Alex To (pictured) and Carina Lau on his hiking excursions around Hongkong. “I started hiking ‘cos in the ’70s I was filming non-stop, until the early hours of the morning and travelling to every corner of the New Territories,” he says. “But then my eyes were so tired and I didn’t realise how beautiful my surroundings were. After many years, I finally returned to the same places and I was overcome by emotion! There wasn’t a tree there before but now there are so many trees. This place used to be an empty field but now there are so many high-rise buildings.”

“I don’t have any stress or burden in my life,” says Fat Gor, who has no kids. “Sometimes after trekking, I will go to the food centre in the city to have breakfast. That’s how it is, very simple. It’s only the people around me who don’t think [my life is] simple. Is it ’cos everyone thinks too much? “Wah, why are you taking the train?” I have an identity card, so why can’t I take the train? I think that some people believe that just because you are born here, that when you have money, you need to move up to the next level. And that you are supposed to own whatever material goods people of that level are supposed to have. The minute you don’t do that, you are considered strange. Why do I take the train? When I take it from Tsim Sha Tsui station, I reach Admiralty station in five minutes. But a lot of people care about status symbols, and so they have to be stuck

In the past, Fat Gor used to own a bevy of vintage Mercedes Benz and BMW cars but now he takes the bus or the train when he travels. “I’m already an antique myself, why do I need to drive a vintage car? I’m breaking down every other minute myself already (laughs),” he jokes. “So I sold my cars to people who like vintage cars. It’s like having a pet, if you don’t think you are capable of taking care of your dog, you are better off giving him to someone who loves animals. So now when I see how well taken care of my old cars are, I’m very happy!”

He says that it was his Project Gutenberg co-star Aaron Kwok – we’re guessing it’s the Heavenly King’s impossibly youthful looks and trim physique — who inspired his crazy weight loss routine. “I only started exercising at age 60, so it’s like I’m making up for lost time. Some people say that humans can live up to 120, which means that I’m only at the start of the next half of my life. Give me another 20 years and I will become fitter. I have confidence. It’s like I’m communicating with my body every day. I never had this opportunity in the past.”
