Daniel Chan, 45, Joins Reality Competition; Netizens Say He Looks So Different Now
'Different', indeed.
Back in the '90s, Hongkong singer Daniel Chan was considered the leading Prince of Cantopop and the next in line to be conferred the title of ‘Heavenly King’. Industry watchers then believed that his good looks and talent would blossom to be on par with Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai, Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok.
Alas, it was not to be and Daniel never reached the stratospheric heights showbiz pundits predicted he would.
In recent years, the now-45 year old has focused his career in China — he has not made an appearance on Hongkong TV for almost five years — and is taking part in a new reality talent search there called Shine! Super Brothers. According to reports, the show’s concept is similar to Sisters Who Make Waves, where celebs compete with each other for a chance to be part of a pop group. Daniel, who is the second oldest contestant, is competing against other 31 stars including Ming Dao and former Little Tigers member Julian Chen.
He recently turned up at the show's press conference where his physical appearance quickly became the talk of the town. Netizens couldn't help but wonder why Daniel looks so different now and that he “couldn’t move his face much” and “had stiff expressions all the time”. One particularly mean netizen went straight for the jugular and said that the star “looks like a plastic surgery monster now”.
Netizens then dug out old photos of Daniel in his heyday, writing: “Who would believe that he aged so terribly? He used to be so handsome. Now he looks like he’s had botched plastic surgery.
At the press con, Daniel was asked by the host if he feels nervous being on stage, to which he laughed and said: “I’ve always been taking good care of myself, so I’m not worried about this. I’m confident about how I’ll do in this competition.”
Netizens took it as an indirect admission that he's had work done on his face, a move that they collectively agreed on as “a terrible one”. Yikes.
