Mark Tsang, the 40-year-old younger son of Hongkong veteran star Eric Tsang and his late second wife Rebecca Chu, was recently revealed to have divorced his ex-wife Renee Cheung after almost nine years of marriage.

The news was confirmed by Mark’s older brother, director Derek Tsang, who was approached by the Hongkong media after Renee had shared a photo of herself with a new lover on Valentine’s Day.

Derek added that Mark and Renee still “maintain a good relationship” and gave them his best wishes.

It seems there were already signs of trouble very early on in the relationship. Back in 2013, less than a year after Mark and Renee’s lavish wedding (which was paid for in full by Eric, by the way), the former couple was involved in a very high-profile online spat.

It began when Renee took to Facebook to gripe about her husband’s behaviour, accusing him of always going out and neglecting her and their daughter.

Mark fought back, replying: “Not only do you not care about me when I get home, you will complain about my stupid and ugly appearance.” Renee refused to back down, and told him that the best way to make her shut up would be to make enough money to render her speechless.

It gets worse. Renee allegedly called her mother-in-law “the most hated animal in the world” and alluded to being a gold-digger by saying that all Eric has to do is “sneeze, and he’ll get a million dollars”.

She even mentioned the possibility of using her daughter as a ‘get out of jail free card’ for if she ever gets in trouble with the family.

Derek later came forward to claim that both their social media accounts had been hacked, while Eric said that it is normal for couples to quarrel and that he can’t do anything about them wanting to vent their frustrations.

Since then, Mark and Renee rarely appeared together in public.

When Mark’s mother Rebecca passed away from cancer in August last year, Renee was nowhere to be seen at the funeral.

Eric’s eldest daughter from his first marriage, Taiwanese singer-host Bowie Tsang, reportedly said to the Hongkong media that Mark and Renee had “been separated for a while”, so it looks like it was only a matter of time before they officially filed for divorce.
