‘First Look’ At Tony Leung In Shang-Chi Leaked; Netizens Say He Looks Like Jacky Wu
His styling was also compared to that of another character in a Stephen Chow classic.
We’re getting closer to the release of Marvel’s highly anticipated Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (although it did get pushed back another two months), which means that more and more details are being shared — whether officially or not — about the film.
Recently, some folks got their hands on Shang-Chi’s Marvel Legends action figures and posted photos of them online, unveiling the characters’ looks and, um, slightly spoilery profiles for the very first time (so proceed with caution if you’re not familiar with the original comics and don’t want to know too much before catching the flick for yourself).
Hongkong screen legend Tony Leung’s character, the villainous Wenwu (formerly known as The Mandarin), seems to have attracted quite a fair bit of extra attention — and not necessarily in a good way.
For starters, some netizens pointed out that Wenwu’s styling, especially the titular Ten Rings that are being worn as bracelets on his arms, is similar to that of Tailor in Stephen Chow’s Kungfu Hustle.
Um, but their outfits are completely different, though?
Some even remarked that Tony, at least in the illustration, resembles a certain Taiwanese veteran host we never expected he’d be compared to.
“I thought it was Jacky Wu at first,” read one comment.
Oookay. We reckon it’s probably ‘cos of the hairstyle.
This, unfortunately, isn’t the first time the character has drawn controversy.
When Tony was first announced to be joining Shang-Chi as The Mandarin in July 2019, fans in China accused the 58-year-old of being “money-minded” by agreeing to take on a role that was believed to be inspired by Dr. Fu Manchu, a fictional character that’s seen as a racist take on the Chinese.
The character was then quietly renamed to Wenwu as a result.
