We all know Korean heartthrob Gong Yoo (of Goblin, Train to Busan and Coffee Prince fame) looks amazing in a turtleneck sweater and coat. In fact, the handsome, 1.84m-tall actor could pull off any outfit — and that includes his (almost) birthday suit.

In other words, fellow Korean oppa Rain has yet another rival for the unofficial title of Hottest Shirtless Guy.

Recently, a Korean magazine did an interview with Gong Yoo’s personal trainer Yoon Tae Sik, who has also coached other celebs such as Hyun Bin and Bae Suzy, to learn more about his workout routine. According to Tae Sik, his famous client feels like “a chill dude who lives next door” and goes to the gym almost every day to exercise, sometimes twice a day if he’s preparing for a role.

“I see him more often than my own mother,” Tae Sik quipped.

Gong Yoo’s routine goes something like this: he heads to the gym, spends about 10 to 15 minutes warming up, and then exercises with his coach for an hour, followed by another hour of cardio before showering and going home. All in all, he spends close to three hours at the gym.

What he does during the workout depends on whether he’s preparing for a new role or not. “When he’s getting ready for a show, he tries to become that character,” Tae Sik explained. “For instance, for his movie The Suspect, he had to look like a special forces agent, so he ate and worked out like real athletes.”

  • Gong Yoo was also described as someone who is extremely careful with what he puts into that glorious body. “Once, he was on a very strict diet consisting mainly of chicken breast, sweet potatoes, and vegetables, but I told him that he could have a cheat day and eat whatever he wanted for one meal,” Tae Sik recalled.

Instead of rejoicing and going crazy with his newfound temporary freedom (which is what we totally would’ve done), Gong Yoo continued to err on the side of caution. “He called me to say he was going to eat beef and asked me in a very cute voice: ‘Can I drink beer?’ (Laughs) That’s how much he tries to focus on his work and stay professional in every aspect.”

And for the record, Tae Sik revealed that Gong Yoo did drink the beer, although he only allowed himself no more than 500ml of it, which he sipped very slowly.

When it comes to his regular meals, Tae Sik shared that Gong Yoo is someone who isn’t a fan of unhealthy food to begin with, so he usually cooks for himself by grilling, steaming or heating up dishes without using a lot of condiments. Hashtag eat clean.

If any of you guys are looking to try and achieve Gong Yoo’s stellar physique, Tae Sik was kind enough to demonstrate the exact moves that he does with Gong Yoo, which you can check out in the video below. Good luck!
