Motherhood hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park for Hongkong actress Grace Chan, who gave birth to her second son Yannick in August. The 29-year-old shared more about her struggles in an interview with fellow Hongkong celeb mum Elva Ni in an interview, where she revealed her struggles with breastfeeding, and more.

Calling it the first time she’s spoken about her breastfeeding journey in public, Grace commiserated with Elva, who'd shared that she was worried about her low breastmilk supply during the interview.

Grace said that while breastfeeding was relatively easy when it came to her first son, one-year-old Rafael, her breastfeeding journey with Yannick was a whole different experience.

“With my first child, my supply was okay, I had more than enough stock. But that’s life, you think that you’re fine and okay, [but] the second time round, I had supply problems. [‘Cos of that] I was under a lot of pressure, and suffered from insomnia for a few nights. I went online to look for solutions, and saw that someone had recommended pumping milk intermittently, in a 10-minute cycle. So I pumped the whole night, till the next morning, when I developed a headache, all 'cos I wanted to get more breastmilk,” Grace recalled.

However, when she shared her worries with her husband, Hongkong actor Kevin Cheng, the 51-year-old gave her a piece of advice that set her at ease. She recounted that Kevin had told her that even if she got all nervous and worried about her supply, it would not change anything, so there was no need to put so much pressure on herself.

And it looks like Kevin’s advice worked wonders, with Grace sharing that her breastmilk supply increased after that. She also praised her husband for being really sweet, and taking very good care of her during her pregnancy.

3 of 4 She's putting her family first

Describing Kevin as a “family man” who was “happier than [she was]” when he found out about Grace’s pregnancy, Grace shared that her greatest joy in life was to have a family of her own.

Grace also revealed that when it comes to parenting, she plays the bad cop to Kevin’s good cop.

“He really can’t play the role of bad cop [at home], only I can do it. The kids like to touch everything, and then put their hands in their mouths. I’ll tell them, ‘No, no no’, but their dad will encourage them instead, saying that it’s okay to wipe their hands later. But I’ll still say no, we have to do it now,” she shared.

Oh, and she’s not intending on returning to work anytime soon ‘cos she’s got her hands full at home.

Grace went on to share that she only revealed she was expecting her second child when she was six months pregnant, as she was wary of the extra attention from the public.

Grace said that she was worried that she’d be criticised for eating food that a pregnant woman should not consume, and that merely drinking a cup of bubble tea stressed her out.

Additionally, both pregnancies were not easy for Grace, who suffered from nausea throughout the entire process.

“When I was pregnant with both my sons, I felt nauseous the whole time, and suffered from cramps on my feet too. So if you ask me about [my plans] to have a third child, I’ll be very resistant to the idea ‘cos I don’t want to go through that [suffering] again,” Grace said.
