Chinese host He Jiong, best known for hosting popular variety show Happy Camp for over 20 years, is under fire for two very different reasons. The first is said to have stemmed from an incident five years ago when he visited the Beijing Foreign Studies University to promote his movie Forever Young.

He is believed to have promised a 800,000 yuan (S$162K) donation to provide scholarships for students there, but never transferred any funds to the school.

As the whistleblower is a professor who no longer works at the school, the media was unable to verify his claims. However, the story has spread like wildfire online, with many condemning the host for “trying to seem noble but refusing to follow through with his promises”.

He Jiong's second scandal takes issue with a recent apology he posted about receiving gifts from his fans. Chinese netizens have been so upset about this that Hunan Broadcasting System, which airs Happy Camp, had to step forward to declare that they will no longer allow any of their staff to receive any gifts from fans. They will also investigate complaints that have been submitted by netizens.

Netizens dug up an old clip of He Jiong on the talk show Lipstick Prince, where he complained about receiving 20 thermos flasks and over 50 pens as gifts. As all of them have his name printed on them, he lamented that he’s unable to gift them to others as well.

This led to netizens pointing out the amount of money that has been used to buy the host gifts over the years. “Why is he only talking about cheaper items like thermos flasks and pens? I’m sure he’s received expensive presents from his die-hard fans,” one netizen remarked. “Knowing how competitive fans can get, I wouldn’t even be surprised if everything he uses was gifted to him.”
