Hongkong actor Charlie Cho, who is often referred to as the 'King of Category III Films', recently shared an anecdote about the most unforgettable audition he sat in on, back when the industry was in its prime.

And for those of you who aren’t familiar with Cat III films, well, they were essentially soft porn, so yes, it was a very saucy encounter.

According to Charlie, he was set to play a lewd emperor in The Golden Lotus Love and Desire”, a 1991 film helmed by Hongkong director Li Han-hsiang in 1991. As part of the production process, Charlie flew to South Korea with Han-hisang to conduct an audition for actress hopefuls.

Charlie then went on to share that the director required the starlets to strip completely naked for the audition, and that in all, the actor saw about 20, 30 actresses, all of whom were very pretty .

But when the interviewer took the opportunity to ask Charlie if he “got any action when the cameras weren’t rolling”, the 70-year-old answered with a laugh: “It was so cold in South Korea that the temperatures were below zero degrees Celcius. It was so cold that everything shrank, and I couldn’t even pee. It’s not like I could stand next to the heater all the time and wait for it to swell up.

Um, okay.

He also took the opportunity to joke with Hongkong actress Kingdom Yuen, who was present during the interview. Charlie described Kingdom as someone who’s “only suited for the role of the Empress”, who had to be clothed at all times in The Golden Lotus Love and Desire .

“If that wasn’t the case, I’d have to send for the Imperial Doctor every time I saw her,” he laughed.
