Huawei Heiress Annabel Yao, 23, Joins Reality Show; Netizens Think It’s 'Cos She Wants To Shed "Princessy Reputation"
Easier said than done though.
Although Chinese celebrity Annabel Yao, 23, only made her showbiz debut six months ago, she has already generated quite a fair amount of buzz, mostly because she’s the younger daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei.
And being known as Huawei’s Princess” has earned her a fair bit of criticism.
Apart from being accused of being a bully in school, netizens have also criticised Annabel for “having no star power”, with some saying that she only managed to become a celeb ‘cos of how rich her family is.
Annabel's dad is reportedly worth a whopping HK$20bil (S$3.5bil).
It's said that Annabel is eager to shed her princessy reputation , which may or may not be why she's appearing in reality show Chinese Restaurant 5.
The show follows a group of celebrities led by Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming, who have to manage and run a Chinese restaurant. And judging from the first four seasons, it's no easy task.
The celebs have to cook, clean, entertain guests and do all the heavy lifting on their own with no butler or personal assistant in sight.
In a number of behind-the-scenes photos that were released online, Annabel can be seen helping the show's crew with boxes. She also removed her own luggage from a van.
Netizens response to these candid pictures were largely positive, with many praising Annabel for being down-to-earth and humble.
All that 'cos she handled her own luggage? Sure...
However, all that positivity didn’t last long.
An anonymous netizen took to Weibo to claim that Annabel had engaged a scriptwriter to help her refine her public image.
“In order to ensure that she successfully attracts the adoration of the public on a particular show, Annabel Yao has decided to hire her own scriptwriter to join the production team, so that she can influence the production process,” the netizen wrote.
Looks like the road to superstardom is proving to be a little rocky for Annabel.
