Jay Chou, Who Was Recently Fat-Shamed, Wows Netizens With Slimmer Appearance In New Ad
The Mandopop king was praised for returning to the “peak of his handsomeness”.
It looks like Chapman To may need to take back all the nasty things he said about Mandopop king Jay Chou’s weight.
For those who missed it, the notoriously outspoken Hongkong actor made headlines last month for fat-shaming Jay on Facebook after the latter was pictured looking a little chubbier than usual at a film premiere.
Netizens also ridiculed him for letting himself go since getting together with his wife, Taiwanese-Australian actress Hannah Quinlivan, and cruelly dubbed him “Zhou Zhong”, which roughly translates as “Swollen Zhou” and is a play on his other, more flattering nickname Zhou Dong (Director Zhou).
However, a newly released commercial has everyone eating their words.
Last Friday (Feb 5), an ad featuring the 42-year-old singer looking more like his younger, trimmer self became a hot topic on the internet. Netizens excitedly circulated stills and clips online and heaped praises on Jay for returning to — or even surpassing — the “peak of his handsomeness”.
Comments include: “Sure enough, celebrities just put on weight for fun”, “This styling makes him look even better than his thinner past self”, and “I remember his weight gain being in the news recently, he can just switch freely between being fat and thin?”. Some supportive fans also declared that they like him no matter how much he weighs.
While Jay’s love for bubble tea is often blamed for making him pile on the pounds, one well-informed netizen explained that it could be due to the medication he takes for his ankylosing spondylitis (a form of arthritis that affects the spine), which can lead to swelling.
Jay himself is aware of all the talk surrounding his fluctuating weight and doesn’t seem to mind. He reportedly once said: “You put on weight when you’re happy, right? Sometimes, eating is also a form of enjoyment, and you’re not living if you practise too much restraint.”
